What to expect
Chennai to Ladakh — The Great Indian Ride is a fully supported group expedition from Chennai to Leh, Ladakh, run by riders who have done this route many times over. You ride your own motorcycle or take one of ours; either way a backup vehicle follows the group with a mechanic, spares, fuel and your luggage. Night halts, permits and meals are arranged in advance so you can focus on the road. This is a demanding high-altitude route with long saddle days and passes above 5,000 m — a valid motorcycle licence, prior long-distance experience and medical fitness are mandatory.

First long expedition and I was nervous about the altitude. The rest day for acclimatisation made all the difference, and the oxygen cylinders were reassuring to have along.
Roads were rough in places but that's the point. Briefings every morning were clear about the day's stretch, fuel stops and where we'd halt.
Well-run group of forty riders and it never felt chaotic. Sweeper rider stayed with the slowest bike the whole time — nobody got left behind.
